The most famous track on the album is "Buffalo Soldier. Perhaps not coincidentally, this motif was also displayed on the reverse of the imperial standard of Rastafari icon Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, though the direct model for the album art is a British recruitment poster from World War I.
Inside the album sleeve is an artist's depiction of the Battle of Adowa where Ethiopian forces defeated Italy in Uprising is a reggae album by Bob Marley and the Wailers. Marley died the following year, and Uprising was the final studio album released during his lifetime. This album is one of Marley's most directly religious, with nearly every song addressing his Rastafarian beliefs, culminating in the acoustic recording of "Redemption Song". Some critics speculate that this was Senses - Denney - Visualise EP in part to criticism Marley received for the laid-back, ganja-soaked atmosphere of his previous release, "Kaya", which seemed to sidetrack the urgency of his message.
The song "Zimbabwe" is a hymn dedicated to later-independent Rhodesia. The song was performed at Zimbabwe's Independence Celebration injust after the official declaration of Zimbabwe's independence.
