There are lots of anecdotal stories out there about the sound of amps, but they basically never include gain matching, which turns out to be the critical issue. Gain match, keep the amps well away from clipping, and test blind Jun 2, Columbia River Gorge. I just sold off my PLX as I really don't have a use for it. Prior to that I paired it with a Navigator and I can recommend that setup highly. THe PLX's aren't quite Ryders - Klaus Heavyweight Hill* - Maximum Bass 4 light as the PLX II's - but they're built like tanks, have a great, practical feature set, run cool and in the case of the - kick serious volume out the cab as it were Dec 18, remote mountain cabin Montana greenboy designs: fEARful, bassic, dually, crazy88 etc.
Running sound though a variety of brands and configs in amp racks, once gain structure and crossovers and section balances were set up properly and bands began blasting I never found that any amps of appropriate wattage for the loads they were driving made enough difference tonally to really worry about.
Great discussion so far. So from what I'm hearing, my cheapo Tapco power amp should be able to sound just as good as any other brand.
The cheap price is mainly due to the heavy weight and possibly cheaper build quality? I am really looking Ryders - Klaus Heavyweight Hill* - Maximum Bass 4 go light here. I have read a lot about the Stewart amps but have never seen one in my neck of the woods. I am used to having lots and lots of available headroom so I really don't want to compromise in tone and headroom. Are there any other recomendations for a lightweight power amp? For midweights the Carvin DCM and up seems to be a good one.
There's lots of other midweights I've used that seemed to work well, too, and I'm sure I've missed some. Some amps make a lot of selfnoise and if horns are being driven that becomes immediately apparent. Heads can be even worse. Dec 19, Montreal. I'm a bit in the same boat.
